Jesus’ Understanding of a Clean Heart
To understand having a clean heart we must understand what Jesus spoke of in the New Testament passage in John 13:10,11.
Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
In this passage Jesus was speaking to his disciples about their relationships with him and one another and he refers to Judas when he says, “ye are not all clean,” knowing who would betray him. The Greek word for clean in this passage is the word “Katharos” which means clear.
As he washed their feet he was showing them his commitment to serving them and his loyalty. As he performed that symbolic act he was revealing to them what he had been doing to them in essence with his words.
He had been washing them of their personal agendas and plans, of their desires for prominence and position and had been putting within them a desire for service and love for him and their fellow man, including their enemies.
He had been washing them of the obstacles to covenant relationships - selfishness, self-centeredness, self-serving. He was saying in essence, “You are now clean to serve in loyalty, commitment and faithfulness to me and one another.” You are now truly my friends. But one of you is not clean, For he knew who would betray him.
