Dec 10 - Dec.18
While some people think this is a Jewish holiday and it means nothing to them, the history and spiritual significance of it speaks to all of us.
We see in history times of great oppression and then times of great deliverance and this is one of them, this happened in history after Antiochus Epiphanes attacked the Jews and took the city of Jerusalem by force, looted the temple(the second temple) and set up idol worship of Zeus and defiled the temple.
A Jewish priest's son named Judah Maccabees which means the hammer with his army revolted against this and reclaimed the temple and rededicated it, there was also enough oil to light the Menorah for one day.
Was there no other oil in the temple?and why was the oil to light the Menorah a big deal?
When God told Moses to build the Tabernacle in the wilderness and later the temple was build, everything in it was a type and shadow of God's redemptive plan for us and all He has for us.
He told Moses to make the lampstand(Menorah)from solid gold about 90 pounds of gold worth and it had to stay continuously burning all the time, the priests had to trim the wicks daily morning and evening and keep the lamptstand filled with pure olive oil checking that they are burning brightly and this was the only light that lit the holy place.
The oil was to be pure and made through the press(heavy stones were applied)and the first oil, the purest always went to the house of God.
So the light of the Menorah needed to stay on all the time and when the Maccabees came to the temple there was oil but defiled and not pure contaminated by the invaders and only one cruse of oil that had the high priest seal on it which meant it was pure oil for the Menorah and the miracle was that it was enough for 8 days till more pure oil was made.
This feast is called the feast of lights,Jesus told us that He was the light of the world and He wants us to take this light and become the light of the world.
A light needs oil and just as the Menorah needed pure oil we need the oil of His spirit one that comes from Him,one that comes through the press not defiled oil that comes from the world and its invasion on our lives.
This feast is a feast of dedication and as they cleansed the temple from the idols and all the defilement,God is calling us to rededicate our lives back to Him,get rid of all ungodly things and any defilement we allowed by any form of invasion from the world or satan.Anything that takes place and space more than Him is another god we worship!
Just as the Menorah light was restored when some Maccabees decided its enough and no more the enemy taking advantage, when we decide its enough and we no longer allow our light to be out then the miracle can happen!!!!
